Amber acid (butanedioic acid, ethane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid) НООС-СН2-СН2-СООН is dibasic saturated carboxylic acid. Colorless crystals soluble in water and alcohol. Amber acid occurs in a small quantity in brown coal and various resins, and in amber as well as in many plants.
Production
In industry, amber acid (butanedioic acid, ethane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid) is primarily produced by maleic anhydride or fumaric acid hydration as well as by other methods.
Application
Amber acid is used as follows:
- for production of certain plastics, elastomers, polyester and alkyd resins,
- for synthesis of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, arsenic and mercury containing drug products and in analytical chemistry.
- as a fertilizer. Amber acid potentiates fruit ripening, increases yield level, enhances concentration of vitamins and sugar in fruit. It increases cold, drought and disease resistance.
- in food industry, as a food additive E363.
