Synonyms: salicyl-sulphonic acid, 2-hydroxy-5-sulphobenzoic acid, 5-sulphosalicylic acid dihydrate
Chemical formula: C7H6O6S*2H2O
International name: SULFOSALICYLIC ACID
CAS No.: 5965-83-3
Grade: import, AR, GOST 4478-78
Appearance: white crystalline powder
Sulphosalicylic acid (salicyl-sulphonic acid) is a white crystalline powder; inorganically soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether.
Production
Sulphosalicylic acid is produced by sulphonating salicylic acid with oleum (or concentrated H2SO4 taken as 5-fold excess by weight), or by salicyl-5-sulphochloride hydrolysis.
Application
Sulphosalicylic acid (salicyl-sulphonic acid) is used as follows:
- as a reagent for detection and separation of Fe, A1, Be, Hg, Ti, Zr, Tl, U ions, etc. and for determination of Fe in alloys, aluminum and other items.
- in analytical chemistry, as a masking reagent for certain metals and for spectrophotometric determination of Fe, U, Be;
- in medicine, due to capability of precipitating proteins in their solutions. Sulphosalicylic acid is used for protein nephelometric analysis.
- sulphosalicylic acid and its salts has an antiseptic effect, etc.
