Chemical name: High-impact poly(ethynyl benzol)
High-impact polystyrene grades are 825, 825E, 825ES
High-impact polystyrene is a synthetic amorphous nontransparent thermoplastic material, which makes for a graft copolymer of styrene with rubber (often with polybutadiene).
Abbreviations for high-impact polystyrene in Russian are УПС, УПМ, ПСС (UPS, UPM, PSS), foreign abbreviation is High-impact polystyrene (HIPS).
High-impact polystyrene differs from the general purpose polystyrene with enhanced impact strength and lower stiffness. However, HIPS is inferior to ABS-plastic in impact strength.
It has reduced electrical insulation properties and lower longitudinal strength as compared to general purpose polystyrene. It has sufficient resistance to frost. The parts produced from HIPS operate at temperatures ranging from -30 °C to +70 °C. It is resistant to water, dilute acids, alkalis, alcohols. It is not resistant to organic solvents and technical oils. It is radiation resistant. It has low moisture absorption.
Under the influence of intensive UV radiation ultraviolet aging is observed, accompanied by yellowing and strength loss of the material (the material gets brittle and cracks even on low loading).
