Copper (II) sulphate, 5-hydrate (blue copperas, cupric sulfate) is a blue crystalline powder soluble in water, diluted alcohol and concentrated hydrochloric acid, deflates in the air, freely forms primary sulphates, double salts (schoenites), ammoniates. In nature, copper (II) sulphate 5-hydrate occurs as minerals chalcocyanite CuSO4, chalcanthite CuSO4.5H2O, bonattite CuSO4.3Н2О, boothite CuSO4.7Н2О, brochantite CuSO4.3Сu(ОН), etc.
Production
Copper sulphate (blue copperas) is produced in industry as follows:
- by dissolving Cu and copper wastes in diluted sulfuric acid during aeration,
- by dissolving CuO in sulfuric acid,
- by sulphatizing roasting Cu sulfides,
- as a by-product of Cu electrolytic refining.
Application of Copper Sulphate
Copper sulphate (copper (II) sulphate 5-hydrate) is widely used as follows:
- as a mordant when dyeing textile materials,
- when wood preservation,
- as a microfertilizer intended for crops dressing in soils poor in moving copper forms,
- for seed dressing,
- in electroplating,
