Synonyms: hydrobromic acid potassium salt, potassium bromide
Chemical formula: KBr
International name: POTASSIUM BROMIDE
CAS No.: 7758-02-3
Grade: import, CP, GOST 4160-74
Appearance: colorless crystals in white mass
Potassium bromide (hydrobromic acid potassium salt) is a colorless crystalline substance, KBr. Potassium bromide is a typical ionic salt. When dissolving in water, it undergoes complete dissociation. In addition, it does not undergo hydrolysis as the salt has a strong base (potassium hydroxide) and strong acid (hydrobromic acid).
Production
· For industrial needs, potassium bromide is produced by interaction of potassium carbonate with mixed ferric bromide (II, III) Fe3Br8:
4K2CO3 + Fe3Br8 → 8KBr + Fe3O4 + 4CO2
- In laboratory conditions, potassium bromide can be produced by interaction of potassium hydroxide, bromine and ammonia: 6KOH + 3Br2 + 3NH3 → 6KBr + 6H2O + N2↑
Application
Potassium bromide (hydrobromic acid potassium salt) is widely used as follows:
- in industrial chemistry,
- as a source of bromide ions for production of silver bromide which is used for production of photo- and film strip,
- in medicine and pharmacy,
- as an additive for IR-spectrophotometer for analysing spectra of liquids, potassium bromide does not absorb IR-light within a rather wide range of wavelengths (0.25-25 μm), which allows for its using for these purposes,
- as a thermal stabiliser in production of nylon, chemical substance in oil production, etc.
