Synonyms: carbonic acid calcium salt, calcite
Chemical formula: CaCO3
International name: CALCIUM CARBONATE
CAS No.: 471-34-1
Grade: import, GOST 4530-76
Appearance: white powder
Calcium carbonate is a white crystalline powder, soluble in acids, very slightly soluble in water. Water saturated with CO2 dissolves much better (0.156% at 0°C) due to bicarbonate formation. Calcium carbonate is carbonic acid salt. In nature, it occurs as calcite, aragonite and witherite minerals. Calcium carbonate is a key component of limestone, chalk and marble.
Production
Calcium carbonate can be produced by ammonia carbonate exposure to calcium nitrate: Ca(NO3)2 + (NH4)2CO3 = CaCO3v + 2NH4NO3. To produce CaCO3 of Grade “for luminophors” (without heavy metals), add a few drops of (NH4)2S to Ca(NO3)2·4H2O (AR) and (NH4)2CO3 (pure) solutions. Allow the mixtures to stand for 1-2 days until complete sulphide precipitation.
Application
Calcium carbonate is used as follows:
- in paint industry, in production of paints and finishing materials,
- in glass industry when making glass,
- in construction,
- in agriculture, as lime fertilizer and for complex agrichemical filed cultivating,
- as a filler for resin mixtures, paper, linoleum,
- in production of dental powder, cosmetic preparations,
- in food industry, etc.
