Synonyms: sodium hypophosphite monohydrate
Chemical formula: NaPH2O2 • H2O
International name: SODIUM HYPOPHOSPHITE
CAS No.: 10039-56-2
Grade: import, AR, Switzerland
Appearance: white crystals
Sodium hypophosphite is salt of hypophosphorous acid Н3РО2. Hypophosphites are colorless crystals, disintegrate at 200°С, under heating, disproportionate forming Н2, red Р, РН3, Р2Н6, phosphates, diphosphites and phosphates. Very soluble in water, worse in ethanol. Forms monohydrate.
Production
Sodium hypophosphite is produced by interaction of РН3 with NaClO or Р with NaOH.
Application
Out of hypophosphites, sodium hypophosphite is of greatest practical importance, for it is:
- reducer when applying Ni, Co, Sn coatings onto metals and plastics,
- antioxidant (prevents alkyd resin discoloration during their production),
- PVC and polyurethane stabilizer,
- reagent for As(III) and Sb(III) photometric analysis, etc.
