Description:
Solvent with low volatility and good solvency for use in coatings and other fields of chemical industry.
Properties:
Butylglycol acetate is transparent liquid with low volatility and weak ester aroma. It is miscible with many widely used organic solvents, such as alcohol, ketones, aldehydes, compound esters, glycols, glycol esters, but is poorly miscible with water.
With its ester and ester groups, butylglycol acetate reacts as a typical reagent of its class.
Application:
With its high solvency for many organic substances, soft and pleasant aroma, as well as good miscibility with other organic solvents, butylglycol acetate is widely used in many fields of industry. Some of them are stated below.
The most important field is paintwork industry where it is used as a coalescer (i.e. solvent lowering the minimum film-formation temperature of latexes, thus enhancing physical and mechanical properties of film). Improves luster and flow properties of coatings hardened at 150–200°C. At that, its low volatility and good solvency are advantages.
Sphere of application:
- Additive to thermohardened paints to improve luster and flowability.
- Additive for improvement of brush coating properties for varnishes based on nitrocellulose and cellulose esters as well as for paints based on chlorinated derivatives.
- Butylglycol acetate is a good solvent for urethane top coats.
It is also used in production of:
- flexographic, engraving ink and ink for screen printing;
- dyes for textiles and leather;
- ballpoint pen ink;
- furniture and wood polishes.
