It belongs to strong organic acids. It has all the chemical properties typical of carboxylic acids. It is a colorless crystalline solid. In nature it can be found in sorrel, rhubarb, carambola and some other plants in the free form and in the form of potassium and calcium oxalates.
Application
Oxalic acid is used:
- in textile and leather industry as a mordant,
- as a component of the plating bath for Al, Ti and Sn coating deposition,
- as a reagent in analytical and organic chemistry,
- as a component of cleaning compositions for metal refining from rust and oxides,
- for rare-earth element deposition.
