General properties
Zinc stearate is a white amorphous powder; the melting point minimum 110 °C. It is soluble in benzene, toluene, methanol, ethanol; it is not soluble in water, ketones, esters; it is partially soluble in dilute mineral acids.
Zinc stearate is a surfactant.
Range of application
It is used as a vulcanization activator and a plasticizer of rubbers. It is especially recommended for the manufacture of transparent rubbers. It is also used for the plasticizing of rubber mixtures. It is used as a powder to prevent sticking of rubber compounds and products. It is an antilocking lubricant in the production of rubbers. The dosage of zinc stearate when used as a vulcanization activator and a rubber plasticizer is 2–5% wt.
Zinc stearate is used as a lubricant in the processing of a variety of plastics. It is a thermo and light stabilizer of PVC products, usually added together with stearate of calcium, lead, barium, cadmium (in the manufacture of linoleum, artificial leathers, shoe plastic compounds, packaging film, etc.). The dosage when used in the compositions of plastics is 0.1–1% wt.
In the production of molding powders it is used as a lubricant, prevents adhesion of pressmaterials to bowls, screws in the manufacturing process and to frames in the processing into products. It is used as the sealing grease in the ester impregnating compounds for sheet molding materials, glass-filled premixes, etc. In perfume industry it is introduced into cosmetic powdered units, powder as a hydrophobic component. In dense powders it improves the adhesion and coating of powders. In construction it is used as a hydrophobic additive for dry plaster mixtures. It is used as a leveling agent in polyurethane and nitrate cellulose varnishes.
Zinc stearate is also used in paper industry as an auxiliary component which makes the mixtures homogeneous and contributes to better mixing, as well as makes the paper surface smooth (special paper and cardboard grades). In the production of powder metallurgy items it is used as a lubricant and an additive increasing the wear resistance. In ceramics industry it is used as an additive improving viscosity and making the mass plastic, as well as gives the product integrity.
