Zinc chloride (ZnCl2), zinc dichloride is a colorless, hygroscopic, crystalline substance, soluble in ether, ethanol, glycerol and acetone. Concentrated aqueous solutions of zinc chloride dissolve starch, silk and cellulose. Zinc chloride is Lewis acid of moderate strength.
Range of application:
Zinc chloride (zinc dichloride) is used:
- as a drying agent;
- for fire protection (fire-resistant foam, cardboard and tissue impregnation);
- for antiseptic impregnation of wood and sleepers;
- in fiber production;
- in the production of vanillin and zinc cyanide;
- in the manufacture of coloring agents and cotton dyeing;
- in petroleum refining;
- in aluminum production;
- in soldering, galvanizing and in the preparation of metal articles for chroming, as a fusing agent for metal refining before soldering;
- in galvanic batteries, as an electrolyte component for electroplated coatings;
- as an antiseptic for wood processing;
- as a mordant in fabric dyeing,

Safety measures
Zinc chloride is a very toxic substance. It refers to Category 2 toxic substances in the solid phase. Contact with the skin and mucous membranes may cause irritation, and prolonged contact may cause severe burns, which are very difficult to heal.
The substance inhalation poses a hazard to air passage. If a small amount of a substance is inhaled, it may cause a dry cough, throat and nasopharynx irritation. A large amount of zinc chloride may cause labored breathing.
Contact of zinc chloride solution with mucous membranes of the eyes may cause a sharp stabbing pain. In this case, the eyes should immediately be rinsed thoroughly with water; otherwise it may result in full or partial loss of vision.
It is necessary to observe safety precautions working with this dangerous substance, in particular, to wear suitable protective clothing, rubber gloves, safety spectacles and respirators.
